Superman: Last Stand of New Krypton #1

What can I say, I’m on a roll, this is the third week in a row that I’ve actually enjoyed the comic book I picked to review.  Now, before I go any further let me say that I did read the earlier Superman: World of New Krypton series and I enjoyed that series from beginning to end.  Having already read the World of New Krypton series certainly made it easier for me to enjoy Last Stand of New Krypton #1 because this series is, in fact, just a continuation of the previous series.

Really, DC could have just made World of New Krypton a fifteen part series and this would have been issue number thirteen rather then number one of a new series.  In all fairness, the story has moved into a new phase beginning with this issue but it is still the same overall storyline.  The decision to break this storyline into multiple mini series rather then one long maxi series probably was an economic one.  As this epic storyline moves on toward its ultimate conclusion it may prove to have been a wise decision to break it into multiple mini series but that remains to be seen.

For those who did not read World of New Krypton go out and read it; you wouldn’t be sorry.  While, it is possible to jump into this story with Last Stand of New Krypton #1 you just will not get as much out of it as you would if you had read World of New Krypton.  The editor of Last Stand of New Krypton could have made issue one more assessable to new readers if he had included a recap page but unfortunately he did not.

While, I do give this issue a solid thumbs up my best advice is to go back and start reading this storyline with World of New Krypton #1.  If you choose to jump in with this issue, I still think, you will enjoy yourself just not as much.  SPOILER WARNING  I mean this issue does pit a whole world of supermen and women against their former captor in a battle for survival.  Making things even more interesting, this battle is set against a backdrop or personal and political struggle and betrayal.  END SPOILER WARNING  That should be enough to make anyone happy.
