Captain America #1

I haven’t read any Captain America comics since they “killed” Steve Rogers in issue twenty-five of the previous series. While, that was a great issue I didn’t believe for a second that Steve Rogers was actually dead, despite all the hype from Marvel’s management, that he was dead for good. After that issue I stopped reading the Captain America series. I just didn’t have any interest in reading about Bucky Barnes playing at being Captain America. Maybe I missed out on some great stories but I was willing to wait for the return of the real thing.

Now, with the Captain America movie fast approaching Marvel has launched a new Captain America ongoing series for fans both new and old to jump on. I’ll tell you right now this series is off to a great start. I picked this issue up after not having read any Cap books for more then two years and I didn’t feel lost or overwhelmed at all. The artwork in this issue was first rate I take my hat off to Steve McNiven and Mark Morales. Still, as good as the artwork was in this issue it was Ed Brubaker’s story that really hooked me. Brubaker does an excellent job of resurrecting Captain America’s World War II past to create danger and excitement in the present. I can’t really tell you what the story is about because Brubaker only reveals a little of the plot in this first issue. What has been revealed though along with the fast passed action and wonderful character insights is enough to make me want to read the next issue. In fact, I don’t know if I can wait for the next issue but I guess I’ll have to. Let me wrap up this review by simply saying that regardless if you are a long time Cap fan or you just want to give the character a try pick-up this issue, you will not be disappointed. I hope the upcoming issues are as good.
