Image Firsts: Godland #1
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again these $1.00 introductory issues are a great idea. The Image Firsts line of books reprint the first issue from a number of Image Comics best selling titles. Godland is a classic superhero action adventure series with a strong sci-fi influence. The series is very reminiscent of Jack Kirby’s work from the 1970’s, so much so in fact, that the series can be considered a tribute to Jack Kirby. Some of the panels in this issue look like they could have been lifted right out of Kirby’s 2001: A Space Odyssey or New Gods series. This means that if you are one of the few people out there who doesn’t like Jack Kirby’s work then you need go no farther because this comic is not for you. If, on the other hand, you, like many others, are a fan of Jack “King” Kirby’s work then go ahead and give this issue a try there is a good chance you’ll enjoy it. If you do try it and you enjoy it then you’re in luck because there are five trade paperbacks worth of comics for you to read. If you are unfamiliar with Kirby’s work then all I can say is shame on you. You need to forget about picking up a comic that is a tribute or copy of his work and instead pick up some of the real thing. Go out right now and pick up one of his classic works either as back issues or as a collection.
Let me implore everyone, one more time, to take advantage of these $1.00 introductory issues that are being put out. Regardless of whether it is a reprint or original material these issues represent a great opportunity to try a variety of series at an incredibly low cost. They enable you to try series from different publishers, different creators and different genres at such a low price that you can’t go wrong. Look at it as a way to try something that you might never have tried otherwise all at little risk or cost to you.
