T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents #1
As soon as I saw that this comic was coming out this week it was a given that I was going to be doing a review of it. The reason for that is simple, it’s because this is the title that made me a life long comic book fan. When I was a kid my older brother had a small black and white reprint of the original Tower Comics T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents that I read. Needless to say, I loved it and, in fact, I must have read that book over and over again until it fell apart. Even after all these years I can still remember some of the panels from that book vividly. That says a lot about a comic if you can still remember it not just fondly but also so clearly even after so many years.
This relaunch did not have the same effect on me as that black and white reprint did all those years ago but still it wasn’t a bad start. This issue is focused on laying out the concept behind T.H.U.N.D.E.R. and its force of super powered agents rather then the actual characters. That is why we get a lot more of guys in jackets and ties rather then guys in costumes. I think this is a smart approach since most comic fans today probably know nothing at all about the back-story of the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents and since this new series does, at least in someway, build on the original series. The issue is not totally devoid of action since we do get to see what happened to the previous group of T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents. SPOILER WARNING The previous group of T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents gets killed in a trap set by a shadowy group called S.P.I.D.E.R. while on a rescue mission. END SPOILER WARNING
Overall, the story is off to a slow but solid start that has left plenty of room to pick-up steam while the artwork is very good and is well matched to the story. All in all a good first issue for this relaunch and I for one look forward to reading more.
